The UA Ruhr Graduate Centre for Development Studies is not only one of the most important think tanks for development studies in Continental Europe. It is also offering a range of highly competitive teaching programmes at postgraduate level which reflects the Centre's interdisciplinary approach to development issues as well as the international focus.

Some of the programmes, the MA in Development Management, the MA in Development and Governance, and the PhD in International Development Studies are part of the Erasmus Mundus Action 2 project EUSA_ID.

MA students and PhD candidates directly benefit from Centre activities through access to lectures & seminars as well as supervision and mentoring beyond the borders of their own programme.

The UA Ruhr Graduate Centre for Development Studies offers five different study programmes, three at MA level, and two at PhD level:

MA in Development Management (IEE)

MADM IEE 260x149pxSince winter 2000, the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) has offered an international English-language Master Programme in Development Management. Since May 2002, the program has also been offered at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa; originally as part of the DAAD initiative "German Programs of Study Abroad" and now as part of the DAAD funded "South African - German Centre for Development Research and Criminal Justice". The duration of each program cycle is three semesters (18 months). For each intake, up to 25 students are accepted in Bochum and up to 20 students in Cape Town.

MA Development and Governance (IfP)

The Master in Development and Governance (MA DevGov) is a one-year English language program at the UDE’s Institute of Political Science established in 2010. It is tailored to train young professionals from developing countries in the basics of good governance and public policy. To this end, the program combines relevant courses from existing MA programs at the Institute – the MA International Relations and Development Policies and the MA Political Management, Public Policy, and Public Administration. The number of participants is limited to a maximum of 15 students – mostly from developing countries. The program is included in the German Academic Exchange Service’s (DAAD) Public Policy and Good Governance program which offers scholarships to prospective future leaders from developing countries seeking academic qualification.

MA International Relations and Development Policy (IfP)

The Master’s degree program in International Relations and Development Policy has been established in 2006. The general language of instruction is German but a considerable number of courses is offered in English. The program schedule runs over four semesters (24 months)

PhD in International Development Studies (IEE)

iee-phd1From winter 2007, the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE) offers an international English-language PhD-Programme in International Development Studies (IDS). It is implemented by the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy on behalf of the Faculties of Geography, Law, Social Science, and Economics. Up to 12 PhD candidates are accepted to the program annually. The programme builds on three fundamental pillars: It is a structured PhD-program with a strong interdisciplinary and international focus.

PhD Programme (INEF)

This doctoral programme in political science is offered by the Institute of Development and Peace (INEF) in cooperation with the Institute of Political Science, the Heinrich-Heine University of Düsseldorf, and the University of Applied Sciences of Düsseldorf.
