This doctoral programme in political science is offered by the Institute of Development and Peace (INEF) in cooperation with the Institute of Political Science, the Heinrich-Heine University of Düsseldorf, and the University of Applied Sciences of Düsseldorf.

The programme started in 2006 and is currently attentended by around 25 PhD students. The coordinator of the programme is Dr. Cornelia Ulbert. Admission to the programme is based on a prior acceptance of candidates as PhD students at one of the aforementioned institutions. Moreover, candidates have to be supervised by one of the members of core team.  Thus, in contrast to the PhD programme at the IEE, there are no formal application procedures and deadlines.

Teaching in this programme is at the present time mostly in German. The curriculum is based on a series of workshops stretching over the academic year. Workshop content is arranged on an annual basis with a focus on methodological and theoretical issues related to the research work of the participants. Themes covered in these workshops range from general questions of research design, exposé writing and field research in developing areas to specific methodologies such as process tracing, case studies, small-n analysis, QCA, discourse analysis, or nested analysis, and also includes general career issues such as publication strategies and presentation skills.

Through this programme, moreover, doctoral students are given the opportunity to embed their individual PhD projects in the broader research frameworks of the participating institutes.
